Report found it costs U.S. $124 B a year; a price tag similar to diabetes, stroke

WEDNESDAY, Feb. 1 (HealthDay News) — Child abuse and neglect cost the United States $124 billion a year, which is comparable to the costs of other major public health problems, a new government study shows.

Researchers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention analyzed 1,740 fatal and 579,000 nonfatal cases of child maltreatment over the course of one year.

Group hosting backpack, toy drives for foster kids

HUNTLEY – It’s Our Little Secret, a new nonprofit organization in Huntley, is hosting two charity drives to benefit foster children. A back-to-school backpack drive will run through mid-August. The goal of the drive is to collect 200 filled backpacks for children in foster care.

Huntley woman starts nonprofit

HUNTLEY – Kristie Sams-Faulkner lived in seven foster homes. Both her parents were crack addicts, and Sams-Faulkner was physically abused under foster care. She also was sexually abused by three people.
